Social media is a term used to describe a means to extend a variety of information to those whom are interested in a particular subject (eg news, hobbies etc).
This might take the form of postings for information (but no comments or collaboration permitted).
Or collaboration and subscribers to the blog permitted to comment, critique or offer various viewpoints. Some blogging sites permit deeper collaboration and forums and uploading files; also live chats.
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia (and other similar sites) may all fall under the 'social media' banner.
